Prior to releasing his own music, Sterling was an accomplished ghostwriter, having worked with Lana Del Rey, Adam Levine, Avicii, Madonna and others. The records he has worked on have sold more than 12 million copies.
With "Freak Caroline," however, Sterling is no longer writing for the celebrity artists, but rather has ventured into the unfamiliar territory of writing about them. The song is "loosely based on people I've worked with or written for," Sterling told Interview Magazine. It is "a reaction to their narcissism" and inability to have "anything real or meaningful to say about the world."
In addition, Sterling will release a music video for "Freak Caroline" - one that he says goes "back to a bygone era of just having fun and playing in a band." You can see a teaser for the video here or below:
