SUR Talks About His Debut Single, "Lean Back" and Plans for 2018

SUR, the brainchild of Northern California bred musician/producer Zack Arnett was born following a fateful trip to Big Sur, which set him out on a quest to create new music inspired by love, violence and nature. Driven by the feeling of suffocation in California contrasting with the freedom of the wild, SUR's music is soulful and larger than life and his foot-stomping new anthem, "Lean Back" is sure to find him a home in the indie/pop music scene.

SUR is currently hard at work on an EP to follow his debut single, but until then, you can get to know him and listen to "Lean Back" below.

Interview by Dom Vigil

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself for any readers who might not be familiar?

I'm a high powered super mutant not meant for mass production.

What first inspired you to begin creating music as SUR?

The suffocation of the city and the breath taking beauty of a journey into the wild blue wild.

How do you feel the music scene in California has helped to shape you as an artist?

I grew up listening to underground hip hop like Freestyle Fellowship, Abstract Rude, and Pharcyde which was spawned in LA. Rage Against The Machine is an LA band that definitely guided me through my angry years. The Quannum Spectrum Collective in the Bay Area was a huge inspiration as well. Cali has a tendency to take art and flip it on its head and I've always loved that mentality, I tend to approach everything I do like an abstract hunter... Thanks Cali.

On top of writing music, you’re also a visual artist and poet. How do you feel these different creative avenues blend into one another or help you to create the best music possible?

It's all one big happy, insane family up here. I'm just glad I get to do what I love for a living and express the madness.

You’re just releasing “Lean Back,” your debut single as SUR. What is the story behind the track?

It's a drama for sure. The song is like a statement about our perception of what's right and wrong and how sometimes we don't have the luxury of being "right" when backed into a corner to survive or protect we will channel the savage beast.

What would you like listeners to be able to take away from “Lean Back”?

The beauty of violence, love and nature

“Lean Back” is a sneak peek at your upcoming debut EP. It’s still a ways away, but is there anything that you want to share about this upcoming collection of songs? What goals do you have in mind for it?

There will be no end to the hunger in the heart of the Savage Beast. Violence, Love and nature will collide together and open the minds of all who listen.

Can listeners expect to hear any more new music soon?

Yes

Do you have any other big plans for the rest of 2017?

Domination
