Renaissance Kids may be one of the newest duos to emerge from Denver, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t know what they’re doing. Having only formed in July of this year, they have just released their debut EP, Another Life, which serves as both an introduction to the band and a story about a different world. Renaissance Kids don’t plan on stopping there, either. With plans to hit the studio again soon, this duo is charging headfirst into 2016.

Interview by Shannon Shumaker
Can you tell us a little bit about Renaissance Kids for any readers who may not be familiar?
We’re a fairly new multi-instrumentalist duo straight outta the Mile High City! We’ve been around since July and have a hell of a story to go with our EP, “Another Life”. The thing about “Another Life” is that it’s just as much a prequel to our story as it is a completely different take on another world. From erupting volcanoes to tidal waves and neon highways; we aim to paint a unique picture for our listeners.
I want to talk a little bit about the Denver music scene, since we’re both from this lovely city. How do you feel that this scene has shaped your music?
Denver has a really interesting music scene. It’s been crazy seeing how it’s changed over the past ten years. We’ve seen a lot of terrible Metalcore acts coming up in Denver and its made us strive to create better music. Don’t get me wrong, there are some awesome bands in Denver right now that draw in a decent crowd and have some awesome music but they come far and few. Denver has a a very diverse music scene and it’s always great to see some of the new bands and solo acts coming up.
Is there anything new that you hope to bring to your local scene?
I want to influence new musicians to make that jump and inject some fresh blood into the scene. Nothing will happen unless you try. The beauty of music is that there’s always going to be a gnarly critic (not just yourself), but nobody is excluded.
Being a very new band and having been in other projects before, what did you want to accomplish with Renaissance Kids that you maybe hadn’t had the chance to do before?
A really alluring aspect was the independence to be able to do things our way. When you work with one other person, you can bounce things off each other in ways that you can’t quite do with multiple bandmates. We’ve noticed ourselves having a lot more fun and i’m sure the music itself shows. That alone makes it a great new experience. We want to go all the way, and I don’t see us stopping anytime soon. We’ve only just begun.
You guys just released your EP, Another Life. What do you hope to accomplish with this EP?
We want to reach others emotionally, mentally, and face to face. In the current, Internet age, we’ve come to be okay with just seeing musicians or viral personalities on the screen and being content with that. Ideally we want to get that ball rolling and start gaining momentum!
Were there any messages or themes you wanted to touch on in Another Life?
Live now, live forever. Move on from the past and live in your present.
The first single that you released from the EP was “Time Froze and You Set the Fire” – can you tell us a little bit about the song?
It’s about how sometimes love can cause us to feel as if we are completely still. It can hurt, you’re going to feel this event for the rest of your life. In those moments, eventually a brick is thrown with so much force, it shatters the glass walls of your heart. Water will flow, water will freeze, but whether you like it or not, the fire is going to burn a hole right through that fucker and continue the flow. So hold on, because if time freezes, you know that fire is coming.
What would you like listeners to take away from Another Life?
Something. I want you to take anything from it if you can. I can’t tell you what you’ll experience but telling you what to expect would water it down. Everyone who hears the music will associate it with different events in their lives, and everyone will find meaning in the songs in different ways. Bottom line, we want our listeners to be able to be hopeful after hearing “Another Life”.
Now that the EP is out, do you guys have any big plans for the end of 2015 or beginning of 2016?
We’re going to be flying up to New York in the dead of winter to hit the studio again! It’s funny how things work out. In Arizona there were sandstorms, it was hot as balls, and my boots were melting to the concrete. It was like living in front of a blowdryer for twelve days straight. So… Let’s see what happens when we land in New York. I already know the weather is going to make us up the heaviness a notch whether we want to or not. We all just want to have fun and kick ass here, and that’s exactly what we’re going to do. Unless someone forgets the gum.
